Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series
The Ashtanga Primary Series is a set sequence of postures linked together with movement-breath coordination that forms the foundation of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Imparted by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the sequence is designed to create heat and purify the body, while also building strength, flexibility, and stamina. It begins with sun salutations (Surya Namaskara A and B) to warm up the body and establish a steady breath. Following the sun salutations, there are a series of standing, seated, and finishing postures. Each posture is designed to prepare the body for the next, creating a continuous practice and cultivating a sense of equilibrium in our bodies. Gain a sense of balance, inner stability, strength and flexibility as you move through the Primary Series.
Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga
Build a Solid Foundation: The practice of Ashtanga Yoga provides a structured approach to yoga, making it easier to establish a regular practice. The repetition helps to develop muscle memory, allowing the body to become more familiar with the movements and transitions.
Gain Strength and Flexibility: The primary series consists of a series of postures that systematically work on strengthening and stretching all the major muscle groups in the body. Through consistent practice, you will notice significant improvements in your strength, flexibility, stamina and overall fitness.
Improve Focus and Concentration: Ashtanga yoga is known for its emphasis on breath control and drishti (gaze). As you move through the sequence while synchronizing your breath, you develop a heightened sense of focus and concentration and gaining mental clarity to help you stay present and focused off the mat as well.
Reduce Stress: Ashtanga yoga involves a combination of movement, breath control, and meditation. This holistic approach helps to calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote a sense of inner peace and tranquility.
Develop a strong foundation for your practice with our Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series Workshop. You'll be guided from the beginning in a traditional and accessible way, building from the first Sun Salutation through the entire Primary Series.
